As long as I’ve had an interest in street photography there has always been a kind of shot I’ve wanted to take. It’s one that I’m sure anyone with an interest in street photography has seen before, a subject highlighted by a beam of direct sunlight. High contrast street photography images in general, with deep shadows and detailed highlights, have always been some of my favourite images. A perfect example of these kind of images is Mirko Saviane, a photographer who captures in beautiful detail life in Venice and particular the beautiful colours of Burano.

Mirko’s images have beautiful, vibrant colours with rich detail in the highlights and dark shadows, exactly like the style of image I was going for when I took this photo. I saw these men caught in the bright beam of light and immediately raised my camera. When editing the photo my goal was to create this high contrast look with detailed highlights. You can see in the video bleow how I went about this.
